Grandma Bernice Tudor's World War II Cake

Grandma told me this recipe came about when there was rationing for dairy products, eggs and other things that could not be had very often due to the war effort.  This was a way they could have a dessert.

1 cup brown sugar

1 1/4 cup water

1 cup raisins

1/2 tsp each cinnamon and nutmeg

1 tsp salt

1/3 cup shortening

5 tsp baking powder

2 cup flour

1/2 cup nuts

Boil sugar, water, spices and salt. Cool. Add remaining ingredients. Bake at 350◦ in a greased, floured tube pan for about 45 minutes.
